Jasper is a type of chalcedony that contains impurities. Jasper can form through the cementing of loose sediments or the crystallization of hot solutions in igneous rocks. Jasper comes in a variety of types and colors. It can be almost any color and is actually known for its unique patterns and colors. The presence of impurities, such as iron oxides, clay, and chlorite, is responsible for the stone’s different colors and markings. It is mostly red, green, yellow, brown, and sometimes, even blue, but that is rare. The presence of iron, usually in the form of hematite, turns jasper red. Impurities of clay cause a yellowish-white or grey color. Goethite introduces yellows and browns. Impurities of chlorite can turn jasper green.
Jasper was a highly valued gemstone in ancient times, and its name can be traced back to various languages. The use of green jasper for making bow drills in Mehrgarh during the 4th and 5th millennium BC highlights its importance in early human societies.
Care: It is a harder stone, on the Mohs scale of 6.5 - 7.0. This means it can stand water and sunlight just fine, but leaving it in direct sunlight too long can cause fading of some of the colors. It should not be stored with harder stones, as this can damage the jasper and it should not be stored with softer stones, as it can damage those. It should be cleansed at least every two weeks, but if you are around a lot of negativity, more often. It can be cleaned with water, sunlight, selenite, moon, sound, and smoke.
Although each variety has slightly different benefits, all jasper stones are profoundly grounding. In general, it is a very soothing stone and helps you to love yourself as well as others. It is very healing of the emotions and brings peace of mind. It helps with acceptance of responsibility and increases patience. It balances, stabilizes, and heightens your awareness. It is also a protector from the 'evil eye' and brings support during stress. In ancient civilizations, it was used as a talisman to ward off negative forces and promote courage and determination. It is also thought to enhance your ability to handle difficult situations, making it a popular stone for those going through challenging times.
