Opalite is a trade name for synthetic,
man-made opalescent glass and resin mix. Other names for this glass include
Argenon, Tiffany Stone, Sea Opal, Imitation Opal,
and Opal Moonstone. It is also used to promote impure varieties of
common opal. It was designed to mimic the appearance of the October birthstone,
natural opal. It is made of tiny spheres of silicon dioxide. The first
synthetic opal was created in 1972 by French chemist Pierre Gilson. People
loved it so much that Gilson’s gemstone commanded its own market demand, giving
rise to its newer name “opalite.”
