Rhodonite is a manganese silicate mineral with an opaque transparency. Rhodonite comes in shades that vary from pale pink to deep red. It has a vitreous luster and is composed of other minerals such as calcite, iron, and magnesium.
The rose-pink stone actually takes its name from Rhodon, the Greek word for Rose. It was first discovered in the 1790s in the remote Ural Mountains that ripple across Russia. A rhodonite stone is frequently mistaken for a rhodochrosite. There is, however, a rather clear physical difference. Rhodochrosite is typically light-pink with white Manganese Carbonate (white) swirls while rhodonite is darker in color with near-black swirls.
